Their temperament is even-tempered and sensitive, dignified and very affectionate. However they may become attached to one person in the family. They are good with older children. Because of their build they are not able to do rough play, they are much too fragile for that. They make good watchdogs, but need to be train with lots of love and not harsh words. Breed associations often have a listing of purebreds that have been given up by their owners. These dogs will make great pets and are less expensive than a new purebred puppy.
Keep in mind that Breeders and Kennels usually specialize in one or two breeds of dogs. And many are very particular about who owns their dogs. Once you have decided on a particular breed, try to visit several different breeders before making a choice. Even though they are pure breeds each will have some distinct factor in their color, size and temperament. You will be able to find the right puppy for you and your family after viewing several different breeders. A good way to get some idea of what your puppy may look like or temperament he or she may have is to see their parents. You don’t want to buy from a breeder that will not allow you to do this. Also don’t be offended if the breeder offers you a less expensive but pet quality puppy. If they know that you don’t plan to have the dog as a show dog they may offer you a puppy with tiny imperfections, great for a pet but would never do for a show dog.

Did you know that there are several hundred breeds of pure breeds that the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes? 127 in total. They are divided into seven functional groups: Sporting, Non-Sporting, Toys, Hounds, Working dogs, Herding dogs and Terriers.
