Remember I said last month there were over 140 breeds of Dogs? Our next dog to learn about is the Keeshond.

The Keeshond is related to the Samoyed, the Chow Chow, and the Norwegian Elkhound. The Keeshond is the perfect household companion. This dog is easily managed, has a good humor with a great personality. The Keeshond likes to be around people so it adapts very easily. He is sensitve and responds well to firm and patient training. He has a very curious nature and doesn’t want to miss out on anything. He can be shy at first to strangers but makes friends quickly. If he grows up with children he can be very patient with them. If given enough exercise he is a good dog for the city life. As for grooming as you can see needs to be brushed about twice a week. Keep in mind that if you bath him it will make his fur very soft. If left along he will bark a lot so keep that in mind. As for height: Males: 18 in,
Females 17 in
Weight: 55-66 lbs
Coat: Abundant, Guard hair that stands away from body with a thick undercoat
Color: A mixture of gray and black, undercoat is cream colored
Common health problems hip dysplasia, and heart disease

Beef Flavored Bagels

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 package yeast (1/4 ounce)
1 cup beef broth (or chicken), warmed
1 cup unbleached white flour
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190° C).
In a large bowl combine the whole wheat flour with the yeast. Add 2/3 cup beef (or chicken) broth and beat for about 3 minutes. Gradually add the remaining flour. Knead dough for a few minutes until smooth and moist,
but not wet (use reserve broth as necessary).
Cover dough and let stand for 5 minutes. Divide dough into about 15-20 pieces, rolling each piece into a smooth ball. Punch a hole into each ball using your finger or end of spoon and gently pull the dough so that the hole is about 1/2″ wide. Place dough on a greased cookie sheet and allow to rise 5 minutes. Bake for 25 minutes.
Turn heat off and allow bagels to cool in the oven.

What’s normal behavior for a new puppy?
Many new puppy parents are confused by their puppies’ behavior during the first few days in their home. You think back to the puppy that you picked out and he was bold and outgoing when with his siblings, don’t be alarmed if he may suddenly seem quiet and withdrawn. Your puppy may not want to eat much, and not seem interested in playing with his new toys and possibly even you. Don’t worry ‘This is perfectly normal.’

Bringing home a new puppy who has just left his canine family and come into a new environment, new people, is often scared, anxious and possibly even lonely, but definitely homesick. So puppies seem to ‘withdraw’ into themselves, sleeping more than usual, they could loose their appetite (keep in mind the food may be different also) and generally not behaving in a very ‘puppy-ish fashion’. This usually only lasts for a few days to a week, and then you will begin to see your puppy’s’ true personality come out once again.
Don’t be surprised if your puppy started off with what seems to be a calm, laid-back attitude, within a week you could have a ‘whirling dervish pup’ on your hands, so be ready for the metamorphosis!

Things to keep in mind when naming your puppy:
Just like naming your child you need to take care in naming your puppy. We know we pick children names with their character, behavior, ambitions… in mind. The same can be true for your dog. The name you chose for your dog can affect your relationship him/her. It is important that you know your dog’s character before you give him a name. A nervous dog needs a name that sounds soft & calm.
A dominating dog is easier to control if given a short, brief, snappy name. Dogs can really only hear (understand) two (2) syllable. So, avoid long names. After a soft consonant, use a strong vowels.
Here are some names to help you choose from:
Blitsy, Breezie, Blubber, Brewsky, Bubbles, Buzzie, Bandit, Zabrina, Zanka, Ziggy, Zambo, Zappi, Zog, Uomo, Ussy, Urda, Ulexa, Pepi, Peso, Pomillo, Prissy, Peanuts, Mika, Mia, Mitho, Javel, Jimba, Jewel, Jetto, Ebony, Essy, Emo, Aaros, Aggie, Artschi, Abby, Abby, Amos, Aremis, Apollo, Artero, Boxy, Baci, Gecko, Gibsy, Selby, Sisko, Sookie, Wrigley

Another common health problem is Distemper. Distemper is the “greatest single disease threat to the dog world. Among puppies, the death rate from distemper often reaches 80 percent. The virus is spread through secretions in saliva, respiratory passages, urine, and feces and by inhalation of airborne droplets from sneezes and coughs. Dogs with strong immune systems can show little or no symptoms of the disease. In other dogs, the illness is mild. However, dogs with compromised immune symptoms, the disease and its secondary infections can be serious or even fatal.
Symptoms:
Distemper in its early stages may be misdiagnosed, because it begins as an upper respiratory infection resembling a cold., a fever of 103-105 degrees (normal for a dog is 100-102.5), loss of appetite, listlessness, and a watery discharge from eyes and nose. But keep in mind dogs do not get colds like we do, so if these symptoms arise with your puppy, call the vet’s clinic right away. After few days, the discharge will turn yellow and becomes thick and sticky and your pup will have a dry cough, and he/she may have diarrhea and vomiting. Within the first two weeks of the disease, the symptoms can fluctuate. Some dogs shake off the disease after this stage, but others progress into pneumonia and neurological involvement.
Treatment will consists of fluids to prevent dehydration, antibiotics to treat or prevent secondary infection, drugs to stop diarrhea and vomiting. Most vets recommend a course of vaccinations for puppies to build immunity because their mother’s antibodies will have diminish in the puppy’s body. Keep your puppy healthy and make sure you stay on top of all his vaccinations, you never know what he will come in contact with, it’s better to be prepared ahead of time.

Salmon Snaps Treats

1 can salmon with juice (8 oz.)
½ cup chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tsp dried)
1 tsp dill weed
3 eggs — shells included
½ cup sesame seeds ground up in coffee grinder
½ cup flax seeds ground up in coffee grinder
2 (or more) cups whole wheat flour — (2 to 3)
Directions:

Put all ingredients into a food processor and mix very well. NOTE: Pour flour through the opening while the processor is on. Use enough flour to make the dough about the consistency of a pie crust (it will roll into a ball – once it does, it’s ready to remove.)
